  • Carson performed the first successful separation of craniopagus  (Siamese) twins in 1987. 
  • Carson performed the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in South Africa in 1997.
  • Carson performed the first successful placement of an intrauterine shunt for a hydrocephalic twin.
  • Carson was named by CNN and TIME Magazine as one of the nation's 20 foremost physicians and scientists in 2001.
  • Carson received the Spingarn Medal in 2006.
  • Carson was awarded the highest civilian honor in the land, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in June of 2008.
  • Carson was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the President's Council on Bioethics in 2004.
  • Carson holds 67 honorary doctorate degrees.
